Regular physical activity provides significant physical and mental health benefits, including improved brain health and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. There has been an explosion of new generative AI tools and advancements in AI capabilities. However, minimal support or resources have been specifically tailored for or made available to pharmacists to develop and work with these tools. In August 2024, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). The viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus is endemic in certain parts of Central and West Africa. It is crucial to have access to mpox vaccines in the most affected countries during the ongoing outbreak. Effective surveillance systems and regulatory pathways should be established for equitable access to the mpox vaccines. Collaborative efforts between governments, healthcare organizations, and policy makers are necessary to create programs that prioritize those at highest risk and work toward global health equity. According to the FIP policy statement, pharmacists play a vital role in ensuring access to essential medicines, but a significant disparity in the number of pharmacists and pharmacies, their roles, and the structure of healthcare systems between low- and high-income countries represent challenges that need to be tackled through targeted initiatives. Pharmacist can inform the governments and health care professionals on the barriers to access to medicines and vaccines. While ensuring equitable access, they can address the solutions for the barriers such as affordability, geographic distribution, and public awareness. The increasing incidence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly among men having sex with men has encouraged the wide preventative use of doxycycline as Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP), although experts think the strategy could benefit patients outside this group. There are also concerns associated with antimicrobial resistance and the frequent (and potentially incorrect) use of antibiotics by individuals who use this intervention. This event will inform pharmacists of the evidence supporting the rational use of this intervention and explore the potential impacts of widespread use from a public health perspective

Worldwide, around 2.6 million deaths were caused by alcohol consumption in 2019, with 1.6 million of these resulting from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), according to the WHO. This webinar explores the burden of alcohol consumption and the complex relationship between alcohol addiction and various diseases, including NCDs, emphasising the importance of early intervention, support, and effective management strategies. A sore throat is a common symptom, typically resulting from an upper respiratory tract infection, the majority of which are viral in origin. As a self-limiting condition, it frequently leads to consultations with community pharmacists. However, it is also one of the most frequent reasons for unnecessary antibiotic use. A sore throat can be associated with various conditions such as strep throat, the common cold, allergies, or other upper respiratory illnesses. Strep throat, a less common bacterial infection caused by Streptococcus, necessitates antibiotic treatment to prevent potential complications. Pharmacists play a critical role in symptom identification and management through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. They are also essential in referring patients for appropriate prescriptions and educating them about the risks of inappropriate antibiotic use.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common chronic respiratory disease that requires comprehensive care. Community pharmacists and their teams are ideally placed to raise COPD awareness, identify those at risk and be the driving force behind earlier detection and referral to primary care partners for screening, diagnosis and intervention. At this event, the “COPD Pharmacy Toolkit” to support pharmacists in providing a range of COPD pharmacy services will be presented. Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is a common condition affecting millions of people, resulting in reduced quality of life and increased healthcare costs. Self-care for sore throat and mouth inflammation are common conditions that affect millions of individuals worldwide, especially during the colder months. Self-care options include non-prescription medicines and non-pharmacological measures for symptomatic relief. Pharmacists play a crucial role in managing these conditions by offering advice on effective treatments, ensuring proper use of non-prescription medicines, and identifying when it is necessary to seek medical attention.

One of the most dramatic shortages experienced worldwide has been the supply of anti-diabetic injectable medication Ozempic® (semaglutide). Introduced in 2017, short supply started early 2022, mainly due to a surge in off-label prescribing for weight-loss and the role of social media. Some have likened it to a ‘tsunami’. Documentaries portray desperate efforts made to attain the product. In response to the high demand, some pharmacists have surprisingly attempted to compound the product in-house. This phenomenon has raised several concerns relating to professional ethics in pharmacy and patient safety. In this session we will discuss ethical concerns about the provision of extemporaneous compounding, off-label prescribing and patient safety.

Heart failure (HF) is often interconnected with other chronic diseases (including ischaemic heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, atrial fibrillation, and obesity), creating a complex web of health considerations. The interconnectivity manifests in various ways, influencing identification, diagnosis, and treatment of these conditions.Community pharmacists are in a unique position to raise awareness, identify those at risk, educate and facilitate early detection and referral for screening, diagnosis, and intervention. At this event, the “Heart Failure Pharmacy Toolkit” to support pharmacists in providing a range of HF pharmacy services will be presented.

Digital health has revolutionized clinical practice, necessitating that pharmacists become adept at leveraging, developing, and benefiting from emerging technologies. Highlighting this need, the 2021 FIP report underscored the importance of integrating digital skills training into pharmacy education through well-designed courses, materials, and hands-on experiences. In response, the Academic Pharmacy Section, alongside the FIP Provision and Partnerships programme and several other FIP groups, initiated a ONEFIP project to overhaul the original digital health in pharmacy online course. This revamped, comprehensive course is specifically designed for educators and practitioners. At this event, we will review the advancements achieved so far, introduce the enhanced digital health in pharmacy course, and explore how this initiative aligns with FIP competency frameworks and recommendations.

To address the need for efficient RNA delivery beyond the liver, my lab designs inhalable, biocompatible nanocarriers for siRNA delivery to the lung. While siRNA drugs typically target the liver, the lung presents undruggable targets that RNA therapeutics could address. Nebulizable nanocarriers for pulmonary RNA administration can extend delivery beyond the liver. siRNA therapeutics are encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) or administered as GalNac-conjugates to protect RNA and facilitate membrane delivery. However, approved LNPs pose immunogenic risks, primarily target the liver, and offer low drug loading. Additionally, lipid-based carriers lack stability in lung surfactant and under nebulization stresses. To overcome these issues, we design polymer-based siRNA formulations.

Inhalable therapies provide a unique advantage by offering both targeted, localized treatment and systemic therapy. Despite the many benefits of inhalable drug administration, current treatment for pulmonary disorders often rely on other delivery routes, resulting in suboptimal therapeutic effects and off-target toxicities. This preference is influenced, in part, by the presence of defense mechanisms in the lungs that are actively involved in clearing foreign materials including drugs entering the lungs. Inhalable nanoparticle-based drug delivery carriers, when optimized, have shown promise in delivering therapies in a targeted and sustained manner to the deep lung tissue for the treatment of several lung disorders including cancer, inflammation and fibrosis. This webinar will explore current strategies in the development and surface modification of inhalable nanoparticles to overcome barriers and deliver therapies effectively to the lungs. Specifically, we will discuss our recent efforts in developing polymer- and lipid-based nanoparticles designed to evade macrophage recognition and uptake in the lungs.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on 5 June to raise awareness and take action on critical issues to make a positive impact on the environment. There are 1.25 billion adult tobacco users around the world, and 60% of them want to quit, but only around 35% of the world’s population have access to comprehensive tobacco cessation services. Given the global prevalence and burden of tobacco use, particularly as a risk factor for noncommunicable diseases, it is important that the services provided by pharmacists in this area are expanded and consolidated. At this event, FIP will launch a global intelligence report on pharmacist-led tobacco cessation services. A joint WHO-FIP statement and call to action on the role of pharmacists in tobacco cessation and examples of successful pharmacist interventions/services in tobacco cessation will also be presented, along with findings from a survey and a systematic literature review.

Pregnant women and mothers often encounter bias by being viewed as inconveniences or liabilities by their employers. Their ability to perform quality work is also presumed to be compromised due to their pregnancy or motherhood responsibilities. Insufficient support and workplace policies exacerbate these challenges, including the absence of flexible work arrangements and adequate accommodations like maternity leave.
These inequities impact women across various sectors; however, they are particularly evident within the health and pharmacy workforce since women represent over 70% of the workforce in the health and social sectors1. To address these issues and inequities, it is crucial to challenge and dismantle the gender biases and stereotypes that perpetuate discrimination against pregnant women and mothers. EquityRx and FIPWiSE (Women in Science and Education) are hosting a digital event to highlight and address some of these issues, particularly those related to maternity leave policies.

Pharmaceutical education is undergoing a dynamic transformation, driven by the evolving healthcare landscape, technological advancements, and the need for highly skilled professionals. To support pharmaceutical education reform in WPR, FIP through the UNITWIN Network on Global Pharmacy Education Development, in collaboration with UNESCO and University College London (UCL), is establishing the FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN Centre for Excellence in Western pacific region.

E-labelling, also known as electronic labelling, represents a significant step towards digital transformation in providing medication information electronically rather than through traditional paper information leaflets (PILs). At the 2023 FIP Congress in Brisbane, Australia, an insight board was convened to delve into the value, benefits, and barriers associated with e-labelling, its role in promoting health equity and equitable access to health information as well as the role of pharmacists in facilitating e-labelling adoption. Subsequently, a report summarising key insights and recommendations from the board was produced. FIP is hosting a digital event to build on the results of the report and to further explore e-labelling as a solution for improving accessibility and equity in health information, whilst also addressing challenges associated with the technology and regulatory aspects.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a preventable and curable disease. However, according to the WHO, in 2022, it affected 10.6 million people worldwide and caused 1.3 million deaths. TB occurs in all countries and in people of all ages. Multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) remains a public health crisis and a threat to health security, with only about two in five people receiving treatment in 2022. Gender inequities persist in the pharmaceutical and health workforce, hindering the professional growth and opportunities for women. Pharmabridge is a program of the FIP Foundation that aims to facilitate educational and professional development, mentorship/tutoring, exchange opportunities for pharmacists, pharmacy educators, and pharmaceutical scientists. The objective is to strengthen pharmacy services, pharmacy education, and pharmaceutical science in developing and transitional countries. There has been a recent increase in awareness within the pharmacy profession to practice in an environmentally sustainable manner. This is coupled with the emergence of concern with respect to climate change. However, sustainability is more than environmental consciousness. Sustainable development requires consideration of all three pillars of sustainability: social, economic, and environmental.

Global spending on healthcare is increasing more rapidly than the global economy, now accounting for 10% of global gross domestic product (GDP). The WHO note that this is of particular concern in low- and middle-income countries where health care costs are increasing more rapidly than in high-income countries. As public money funds the majority of healthcare expenditure, this gives rise to ethical concerns with respect to universal access and equality in the provision of health care to populations.

Sustainability has been further described in the Brundtland report as “meet(ing) the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” (United Nations, 1987).

This session will provide an opportunity to discuss ethical considerations with respect to sustainable provision of healthcare for current and future
generations.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) impact over one billion people annually, and disproportionately affect impoverished communities, particularly women and children in tropical areas, leading to 200,000 annual deaths around the world. In addition, global climate change is affecting the distribution patterns of these diseases and cases are emerging in countries where they had never been a cause for concern. Pharmacists can play a pivotal role in raising awareness of NTDs and in their prevention and management. Originally developed in 2008, the FIP Basel Statements set standards for hospital pharmacy practice and the workforce. These 65 statements are grouped into 7 areas and cover all areas of the medicine use process in hospitals, from procurement to monitoring. The statements were last updated in Bangkok in 2014. To ensure the Basel Statements remain relevant and applicable to hospital pharmacists worldwide, HPS again formed a team for updates in 2023. During this webinar, Drs. Stephen Eckel and Michael Stepanovic will discuss the Basel Statement Update Project, review the activities performed in Brisbane, provide an insight into the continued analysis, and highlight next steps and dissemination plans.

Preventing new HIV infections is one of the most important steps towards curbing the HIV epidemic. Pharmacists are ideally placed to support prevention strategies that can reduce the risk of transmission, including advice on safer sex practices, supporting the use of pre- or post-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP/PEP) and supporting harm reduction strategies for intravenous drug users. Managing and optimising treatments in people living with HIV is another important way in which pharmacists can contribute. This event aims to explore options on how to assess and support patients, establish adherence strategies, manage side effects, provide counselling on lifestyle factors, and make appropriate referrals. Resistant fungi are a growing public health threat. Fungal resistance poses a great challenge in the treatment of dermatophyte infections. To treat dermatophyte infections antifungal medications are prescribed which are usually given without confirmatory mycological testing. Moreover, they are overprescribed due to widespread use and availability of inexpensive topical antifungal preparations or corticosteroid–antifungal–antibacterial combinations.

Pharmacists can play a crucial role in appropriate antifungal prescribing through antifungal stewardship. They can educate patients, increase awareness and be effective stewards of antifungal prescriptions.

This webinar will focus on the growing issue of drug resistant fungal infections and highlight the role of pharmacists in this issue.

The World Health Organization has emphasised the importance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) education. The first objective of the Global Action Plan on AMR is to improve awareness and understanding of AMR through effective communication, education, and training. To address AMR, all clinicians and health-care workers must become stewards of antimicrobials by prescribing them appropriately and educating their patients and colleagues on the proper use of this increasingly scarce medical resource.

However, there is limited evidence regarding the educational needs of the pharmaceutical workforce at a global level. Both HCPs and students express a desire to enhance their knowledge and competency through targeted and effective education and training on AMR. Therefore, FIP developed an online survey to identify the educational needs of pharmaceutical students, practitioners and educators. This webinar will focus on the results of this FIP AMR education survey.

Pharmacy professionals are fully committed to an interprofessional and person-centred approach to healthcare. Where the regulatory framework allows, a wide range of point-of-care tests (POCT) can be carried out in community pharmacies. POCT can be incorporated into disease management programmes to monitor the effects of treatment in people living with non-communicable diseases. The World Health Organization estimated that more than one in 10 medicines in low- and middle-income countries was substandard or falsified (SF). This means that these countries spend well over USD 30 billion annually on SF pharmaceutical products. The FIP is seriously concerned about the ever-increasing risk to public health represented by SF pharmaceutical products, particularly in countries where legislation governing the manufacture and distribution of medical products, or the enforcement of legislation, is non-existent or ineffective.

Therefore, FIP Regulatory Advisory Group developed a regulatory self-assessment tool which is for the detection, quarantine and removal of SF medical products from the pharmaceutical supply chain in a country and to prevent the SF medical products from being used by the patient.

This webinar will focus on the issue of SF medical products and provide recommendations on how the new tool can be used globally to prevent SF medical products.

This is the 4th and final episode in the FIP series ‘Vaccination: Benefits beyond specific disease prevention’ which aimed to highlight the extensive advantages of vaccination beyond merely guarding against specific pathogens in older adults.

Parts 1 and 2 focused on the evidence base of indirect benefits of vaccination in areas such as cardiovascular health, diabetes and arthritis in older adults and prolonged immune responses that contribute to sustained health. They also underscored the indispensable role of pharmacists in promoting healthy aging through vaccination.

To support pharmaceutical education reform in SEA, FIP through the UNITWIN Network on Global Pharmacy Education Development, in collaboration with UNESCO and University College London (UCL), is establishing The FIP-UNESCO UNITWIN Centre for Excellence in South-East Asia.

Recognising the unique needs and systems across countries and regions, this Centre seeks to leverage the expertise gained from the pioneer FIP UNESCO UNITWIN Centre for Excellence in Africa. This aligns with the UNESCO agreement for 2023–2027, emphasising the need for an integrated approach to research, teaching, training, community engagement, and communication.

Common ailment schemes (CAS) (aka minor ailment schemes) are programmes where patients can receive advice, care and, when needed, treatment for an agreed range of common, self-limiting health problems, generally without the need for appointment. They are equally important for triaging patients that do require being seen by a medical doctor or nurse. Such schemes greatly contribute to providing accessible, agile and quality care to patients, and to reducing pressure on general practice and emergency departments, thus making health systems more efficient. FIP conducted a global study on common ailments schemes, including a literature review, a survey of its member organisations, a compilation of case studies and an insight board meeting. The outcomes have been put together into a global intelligence report that will be presented and discussed at this event.

The semisolid topical dosage forms include creams, ointments, and gels. They are special dosage forms with particular compositions, structures, transformations at the site of administration and mechanisms of release. In vitro release test (IVRT) is a simple, reliable and reproducible tool utilized for the assessment of the performance of these complex formulations. The applications of IVRT gradually evolved from screening of the impact of scale up post approval changes (variations) to comparative evaluations of multisource drug products. Mental health is a critical aspect of overall health and well-being. Mental health disorders are common affecting one in four people worldwide. However, mental health patient care services are often inaccessible, leading to negative outcomes such as disability and poor physical health. Pharmacists play a vital role in providing mental health patient care services, as they are often the first contact for the patients asking for help. Developing competency in delivery of mental health services is thus essential for pharmacy students and practitioners. To obtain a high level of knowledge and skills, but also attitudes and values required for these roles, a variety of teaching and learning methods can be used. As indicated in FIP-GCFE, teaching methods should be aligned with participants' needs and the context of learning. This webinar aims to provide an overview of pharmacists' roles in not just promoting mental health and well-being, but to highlight strategies to really deliver mental health patient care services among practitioners and students, and showcase experiences of capacity building programs in the mental health care.

Emphasis is often placed on healthcare challenges facing providers and pharmacists that care for the adult and elderly patient populations – however, children are cared for in many of the same patient care settings: hospitals, ambulatory clinics, and community pharmacies. As compared to adults, children may be at greater risk of medication errors and potential adverse drug events due to individualized weight-based dosing, differences in compounded formulations and concentrations, inability of children to communicate adverse effects, and confusion between units of measure (e.g. milligrams versus milliliters). This session will provide “need to know” information about how to care for a paediatric patient throughout the care continuum (inpatient considerations, transitions between inpatient and outpatient care, outpatient considerations, and transitions from paediatric to adult care) as well as more advanced information regarding innovative approaches and technology implementation in paediatric pharmacy.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent and severe condition that progresses silently in most patients. As such, many patients are not diagnosed until the late stages of CKD, resulting in a greater risk of poor outcomes, such as end-stage renal disease requiring dialysis or transplant. Community pharmacists and their teams are ideally placed to raise CKD awareness, identify those at risk and be the driving force behind earlier detection and referral to primary care partners for screening, diagnosis and intervention. Tobacco use is a global health problem with 1.13 billion smokers and 8 million deaths annually, including 1.2 million from second-hand smoke. It is a burden on individuals, communities and economies, causing various diseases and preventable deaths. Tobacco is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. At this event, FIP will launch a new handbook to support pharmacists and their organisations in providing a range of tobacco cessation services. This will be accompanied by a reference guide identifying the knowledge and skills pharmacists need to provide such services.

This is especially important when it comes to the management of minor ailments through pharmacy. Consisting of a series of five events focusing on common health issues, this new FIP digital programme aims to examine how pharmacists can be enabled to improve health and self-care literacy. Approaches for each of the five areas of minor ailments will be discussed including embedding health and self-care literacy into education and training, developing self-diagnosis and self-medication protocols, widening access to patient information, and improving referral strategies.

The FIP Global Competency Framework (GbCF) was first developed in 2012 (Version 1) and it contained a structured assembly of behavioural competencies that can contribute towards supporting foundation level practitioner development. In September 2020, revisions to the GbCF were completed and the updated version labelled as GbCF Version 2 (GbCFv2).

Digital health has transformed clinical practice in many ways, and pharmacists need to be ready to use, create, and benefit from the new technologies. The 2021 FIP report on digital health in pharmacy education showed the importance of designing courses, materials, and practical experiences to train a pharmacy workforce with digital skills.

This season Dr Duggan collaborates with Shelita Dattani, vice president of pharmacy affairs at the Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada, talking about topics that could have helped them become who they are today.

This 2nd of 4 Digital Events on mentorship will follow the introductory event on mentoring and focus specifically on the use of motivating language as well as draw upon social provisions theory to evoke more effective communication between mentors, mentees, and all colleagues. Research has demonstrated how communication using these strategies helps to engender organizational and profession commitment, as well as mitigate burnout in pharmacy. They are also useful strategies when mentoring and communicating with persons of varied backgrounds to promote gender and racial equity and increase comfort levels of mentors and mentees who are varied in their background.

Stress is defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or psychological tension, and it has been dubbed as “the health epidemic of the 21st century” by the World Health Organization. Stress is the body's response to any situation that requires attention or action, and everybody experiences some level of stress. However, high levels of stress may lead to various physical, mental, and emotional symptoms such as muscle tension, headaches, fatigue, sleep disorders, irritability, increased heart rate, and difficulty in breathing. Chronic stress is also a risk factor for the development or exacerbations of non-communicable diseases. Pharmacists have an important role in helping people prevent and manage stress though pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.
