Regular physical activity provides significant physical and mental health benefits, including improved brain health and reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety. It plays a key role in the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and type 2 diabetes. Physiological changes associated with pregnancy can potentially lead to severe complications like inadequate fetus size for gestational age, premature birth, and increased mortality of both the pregnant person and the neonate. When pregnant individuals are vaccinated, they create antibodies that are transmitted to the fetus. Often, this immunity will protect the infant until they are old enough to receive vaccines themselves.

Among the different special-risk population groups for vaccine-preventable diseases, people that are pregnant have particular vaccination needs that will be highlighted at this event. Pharmacists can play a key role in raising awareness of the importance of vaccination among this population group.

Pharmacy professionals are fully committed to an interprofessional and person-centred approach to healthcare. Where the regulatory framework permits, a broad range of point-of-care (POC) tests can be performed at community pharmacies or clinical biology laboratories. POC tests can provide valuable information to support health-related decision making and reduce unnecessary presentations to general practitioners or emergency departments. POC tests may also be provided as part of a disease state management service to monitor the outcomes of treatment in people with chronic non-communicable diseases. He is currently leading a commission at the Academy of the Medical Royal Colleges on the future direction of medicine and the evolving role of the doctor in a world of shifts in societal and technological advances.

Pharmacists have an important role in supporting the management of minor ailments in the community and promoting informed and responsible self-care. Gastroesophageal reflux is a common reason for consultations to community pharmacists, and symptoms associated with reflux can often be managed through non-prescription medicines. Pharmacists can assess and provide advice on both the pharmacological and non-pharmacological options that patients might follow, check for possible interactions with medication that patients might be taking, and provide education for improved self-care.

Francisco Javier Jiménez graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1995 (BS in Pharmacy). In January of year 2000 he began his professional career at the UPR School of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which continue at present. In 2001 he acquired his certification as a diabetes care and education specialist. In 2004, he became a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist. His main focus and experiences have been related to community pharmacy services, especially for underserved populations, diabetes care and education, immunisation, research and postgraduate training through the UPR community-based pharmacy residency programme, which he started in 2012 in collaboration with four pharmacies.

Since 2016, he has been training and supporting community pharmacists and PharmD candidates to provide and enhance community pharmacy immunisation services. He is also involved with the UPR medical sciences campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

In addition, Dr Burgoyne is a member of the Global Respiratory Infection Partnership, a past president of the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy and a founding member of UtahAWARE, an antibiotic resistance education programme for the state of Utah. 

As a leader of this organisation, Dr Burgoyne was influential in reducing inappropriate antibiotics use in children and adults through public awareness campaigns and physician education programmes.

After studying his MPharm at Cardiff University and completing his pre-registration year in Manchester, Jonathan Lloyd Jones gained extensive experience working throughout Wales as both a locum pharmacist and manager in community pharmacy. A qualified independent prescriber, he used his training to provide an enhanced minor ailments scheme and build an effective services-led pharmacy.

His innovative approaches to service improvement throughout his career have been deservedly recognised and, in 2018, he won both the Independent Community Pharmacy Practice of the Year Award with his colleagues at Sheppards Pharmacists in Aberdare, and the Independent Pharmacy Collaborative Working Award.

Efi Mantzourani is an academic pharmacist and registered practitioner, with expertise in reflective practice and practice-based learning.

Her research relates to technology-enabled provision of pharmacy services. She has provided an evidence-base to health boards in Wales and the Welsh government for commissioning of pharmacy services which have transformed professional practice. Her areas of interest include electronic prescribing, the discharge medicines service, and integration of GP and pharmacy patient records. Recently, she has been focusing on evaluating the first NHS-funded sore throat test-and-treat community pharmacy service in the UK.

Sabiha Essack is the research chair in antibiotic resistance and professor in pharmaceutical sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. 

Prof. Essack is vice chair of the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Antimicrobial Resistance, senior implementation research advisor at the International Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Solutions in Denmark and member of the International Pharmacy Federation AMR Commission. Prof. Essack is chair of the Global Respiratory Infection Partnership, serves on the advisory board of the Combating Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator in the US, the Fleming Fund Expert Advisory Group in the UK, the Market Analysis Expert Advisory Group of the Global AMR Research and Development Hub in Germany and is a member of the Wellcome Trust Surveillance and Epidemiology of Drug Resistant Infections Consortium. She served as vice chair of the South African Ministerial Advisory Committee on AMR at its inception, the South African Chapter of the Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership and the South African Antibiotic Stewardship Programme.

Sarah Dineen-Griffin is a lecturer in health services management and leadership at Charles Sturt University, Australia. She holds a doctor of philosophy degree, a graduate certificate in pharmacy practice, a master of pharmacy degree (with distinction) and bachelor of biomedical science degree. She completed her PhD in pharmacy practice focusing on consumer self-care and the co-design, evaluation and implementation of community pharmacy services. Dr Dineen-Griffin has been a research investigator on national and international pharmacy projects. At an international level, she holds a number of leadership roles. She is an editorial board member for the Pharmacy Practice joucrnal, vice hair of FIP’s New Generation of Pharmaceutical Scientists Group and is FIP’s YPG Community Pharmacy Section liaison. At a national level, she is an active member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s New South Wales branch committee, chair of the NSW Early Career Pharmacist Group, and a member of the National Self-Care Policy Advisory Group (2020). Debbie is leading the National Asthma Council implementation of Asthma Right Care in Australia.   She currently conducts Home Medicine Reviews and provides medicines education to pharmacists, nurses, GPs and other health professionals through her company Pharmeducation.

Pharmacists have a role to play in the prevention, care and management of cardiovascular diseases and their complications. FIP has developed a new handbook to support pharmacists and their organisations in providing a range of cardiovascular diseases-related services. This handbook — which will be launched at this event — also identifies the knowledge and skills that pharmacists require for the provision of such services, thus offering guidance to academic institutions and CPD providers. This handbook is part of the FIP Practice Transformation Programme on Non-Communicable Diseases.

Summary of “Creating development goal indicators – bridging data and outcomes” events

FIP member organisations of each region selected some of the FIP Development Goals which are the priorities of their region. Africa region: DG 1 (Academic capacity), DG 3 (Quality assurance), DG 9 (Continuing professional development strategies), and DG 18 (Access to medicines, devices, and services).

FIP Global Pharmaceutical Observatory (GPO) team members have designed and developed indicators to support tracking progress towards the development goals.​ This globally validated list of indicators across all DGs will monitor progress worldwide and support each country in the process of transformation of their workforce, education, practice, and pharmaceutical science. FIP is developing a framework for selecting indicators and a monitoring and evaluating DGs.  This will enable the design of global Atlas (data visualisation) dashboards that will drive and inform improvement and monitor trends over time. 

The process for tracking the development goals is first is to select priority DGs by identifying general, broad areas where there are active, ongoing national policies or projects mapped to the FIP DGs. The next step is to select the right indicators. Indicators are useful to provide measurable progress towards DGs, identify areas that need attention and support continuous improvement. After that, a monitoring and evaluation framework can be developed. Lastly, continuous development can be provided by regularly updating Atlas dashboards to present how the data changes over time. Atlas dashboards can include an actionable overview of a limited set of key indicators with novel ways of bringing attention to those areas that are advancing the profession or experiencing challenges. These have significant potential to support regular reviews of DG progress and improve the data quality.

African Region Panel Discussion on DG priorities and data requirements:

• All FIP DGs are relevant. The first and the main priority from FIP DGs is the DG 1 (Academic capacity). Academic capacity is the first step for developing the profession. There is a need to collect the data on education such as the number of people in academia, university lecturers, and hours of courses. The second one is the strong regulation for quality assurance of the medicines.
• In Ghana, there is a need to improve access to quality medicines (DG 18). DG 18 (Access to medicines, devices, and services) is the main priority in the continent.
• Three most prioritized goals are: 1) DG 4 (Advanced and specialist development), to enforce the law established in 2012; 2) DG 5 (Competency development) to standardize the competency of pharmacy graduates; 3) DG 20 (Digital health) to control substandard and falsified medicines.
• The Pharmacy Council of Ghana is also developing the e-pharmacy policy and subsequently have developed national electronic pharmacy platform.
• For DG 4 (Advanced and specialist development), there’s a need to get the baseline data in terms of available capacities and specialists. After having the baseline data as well as the needs assessment results, pharmacies can be trained based on their interests and we can track the implementation after the training.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, according to the World Health Organization. Prevention and early screening are crucial elements of interprofessional strategies to reduce the burden, morbidity and mortality associated with cancer, as are medication management for optimal outcomes, and patient support. Pharmacists have a key role to play in all these areas. At this digital event, FIP will be publishing a new handbook to support pharmacists and their organisations in providing a range of cancer-related services. In addition, the handbook will be accompanied by the knowledge and skills (K&S) reference guide in cancer which identifies the K&S that pharmacists require for the provision of such services, thus offering guidance to pharmacists, academic institutions and CPD providers. Both publications will be launched at this event, and they are part of the FIP Practice Transformation Programme on Non-Communicable Diseases.

Opioids have been successfully utilised in the management of pain. However, when not managed adequately, there is a risk they may lead to addiction and abuse among patients, with dramatic consequences in clinical and social terms. One consequence of this is the rise in cases of opioid-related overdose and deaths experienced in several countries. As medicine experts and an essential part of the healthcare team, pharmacists can support in addressing the overuse of opioids. Asthma affects up to 1 in 10 people globally. Living well with asthma depends on avoiding triggers and using good, safe medicines in the right way at the right time. However, there is currently much sub-optimal use of medicine that can result in waste and harm including avoidable hospital attendances and admissions. Hospital pharmacists can be an important part of the asthma pathway and powerful change agents. This webinar will provide updates on major changes in international guidelines that highlight asthma is an inflammatory condition and for safety no-one over 12 should be treated with a short-acting beta-agonist (SABA) alone without inhaled corticosteroids. You will hear from experts from the Asthma Right Care social movement about how to make impactful change happen in the provision of asthma care within secondary care settings.
