Vaccination is one of the most effective measures to prevent disease transmission and protect populations from a variety of diseases that heavily impact individuals and health systems. Overall, through the provision of person-centred pharmaceutical services, pharmacists play a key role ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing, as well as promoting more effective, rational, and widespread use of vaccines. Among the different special-risk population groups for vaccine-preventable diseases, healthcare professionals are in contact with multiple patients daily and are therefore at increased risk of contracting and further spreading vaccine-preventable diseases.

Physiological changes associated with pregnancy can potentially lead to severe complications like inadequate fetus size for gestational age, premature birth, and increased mortality of both the pregnant person and the neonate. When pregnant individuals are vaccinated, they create antibodies that are transmitted to the fetus. Often, this immunity will protect the infant until they are old enough to receive vaccines themselves.

Among the different special-risk population groups for vaccine-preventable diseases, people that are pregnant have particular vaccination needs that will be highlighted at this event. Pharmacists can play a key role in raising awareness of the importance of vaccination among this population group.

Speaker: Ema Paulino, President, National Pharmacy Association, Portugal (ANF), Portugal

Ema Paulino is a pharmacist at her own community pharmacy in Portugal. She is general manager of Ezfy, a company that engages community pharmacies in the implementation of patient support programmes. Ms Paulino is president of the Portuguese National Association of Pharmacies, and immediate past professional secretary of FIP. She is currently on the board of Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe, and is a member of the board of the International Primary Care Respiratory Group. 

Speaker: Francisco Javier Jiménez, Professor, University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy, Puerto Rico

Francisco Javier Jiménez graduated from the University of Puerto Rico School of Pharmacy in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1995 (BS in Pharmacy). In January of year 2000 he began his professional career at the UPR School of Pharmacy Department of Pharmacy Practice in San Juan, Puerto Rico, which continue at present. In 2001 he acquired his certification as a diabetes care and education specialist. In 2004, he became a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist. His main focus and experiences have been related to community pharmacy services, especially for underserved populations, diabetes care and education, immunisation, research and postgraduate training through the UPR community-based pharmacy residency programme, which he started in 2012 in collaboration with four pharmacies.

Since 2016, he has been training and supporting community pharmacists and PharmD candidates to provide and enhance community pharmacy immunisation services. He is also involved with the UPR medical sciences campus COVID-19 vaccination clinic.

Speaker: Jean-Pierre Michel, Honorary Professor of Medicine, University of Geneva, Switzerland

Jean-Pierre Michel was professor of medicine and chairman of the academic geriatric department at Geneva University Hospitals until 2011. He is a former president of the European Geriatric Medicine Society, and acted as World Health Organization expert on the ageing and life course programme.

He is a member of the French Academy of Medicine and a foreign member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Spain.

Speaker: Marco Goeijenbier, Medical doctor internal medicine and intensive care, Spaarne Gasthuis Haarlem/Hoofddorp & Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Marco Goeijenbier is a medical doctor with a PhD in virology and is currently working in intensive care with a research line primarily focusing on virus interactions with the coagulation system and prevention. He is an active member of the European Scientific Working Group on Influenza and is the current chair of the Influenza and Diabetes Community.
