Use of doxycycline for the prevention of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (DoxyPEP): Supporting evidence and the challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR)

5 December 2024

The increasing incidence of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly among men having sex with men has encouraged the wide preventative use of doxycycline as Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (DoxyPEP), although experts think the strategy could benefit patients outside this group. There are also concerns associated with antimicrobial resistance and the frequent (and potentially incorrect) use of antibiotics by individuals who use this intervention. This event will inform pharmacists of the evidence supporting the rational use of this intervention and explore the potential impacts of widespread use from a public health perspective
